After a life well lived, Albert “Al” Springer passed away unexpectedly at Kelowna General Hospital on August 19, 2026.
Al was born March 25, 1946 in Orillia, Ontaria to Paul and Marjorie Springer. He spent his childhood in Copper Cliff, Ontario where he learned to love the outdoors through hunting and fishing with his Dad and earned his Queen Scout badge.
By 1968, he was ready for a change and moved to Vancouver where he got a job in a machine shop becoming a millwright. After settling into life on the West Coast, he soon met the love of his life, Grace Fuller, who he married in 1970.
Al and Grace happily built a young family together having 4 children. Looking for a place out of the big city to raise their family, they moved to Peachland. Al found a job as a carpenter at Gorman Bros Lumber and built a house to raise a family in. He started with a toolbox and bike eventually becoming the carpentry foreman. He thoroughly loved the 30 years of working at the mill and embraced involvement in the many expansions and upgrades throughout that time taking a ‘whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might’ approach to his work. The mill was the source of many lasting friendships. When the 2009 Glenrosa fire started, Al went to the mill and stayed to “lead the charge” of volunteers, monitoring for hot spots and keep the mill from catching fire. He was very appreciative of the Gorman family for shared values, friendships and for providing him with such a rewarding career.
His love for God and his deep faith were also an integral part of who he was. He had a heart for kids and started a fishing camp through Morning Star Bible Camp where he and a group of men would take teen boys to camp and fish at lakes in the mountains. Here they mentored them in fishing, camping and boating. Many memories were made and kids were given the opportunity to learn and experience God in the outdoors. This carried over to his time on the board of Maple Springs Bible Camp where he supported the staff with practical and spiritual leadership. His passion was to share God’s love to others in practical ways. He loved God’s word and spent every day of his life leaning into it and studying it.
He was a loving and involved father and grandfather to 4 children and 8 grandchildren. He spent time teaching everyone to fish and hunt. Many hours were spent trudging through the bush with either a gun or fishing rod in our hands. He coached his sons’ soccer teams when they were young and enjoyed attending his grandsons’ various sporting events. All of his family have learned some independence in swinging a hammer and tackling a project with the knowledge that anything is possible if we set our minds to learning it.
Al is welcomed to Heaven by is parents Paul and Marjorie and sister Shirley. He is mourned by his wife of 56 years Grace Springer, and his four children Melodie (Darren), James (Mary), Joel, and Jonathan (Karen) and 8 grand children: Brendan, Natalie, Carsten, Caleb, Ashton, Oliver, Sarah and Jacob. Also survived by his sister Sharon (Peter), brother-in-law Roy and sister Mary (Rick), and brother Doug (Marnie).
Surely goodness and mercy has followed me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of my Lord forever.
A memorial service will be held Saturday September 26/26 at Maple Spring Bible Camp at 1 pm. Al will be interned at Peachland Cemetery with a private service for family.
The family wishes to thank the Peachland Fire Department and paramedics who responded and provided immediate support as well as the staff at KGH Emergency Department for their compassionate care.
